Parkland advisory board unanimously recommends AEDs and training at three parks

The City of Parkland Parks & Recreation Advisory Board voted unanimously to recommend placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) at Terramar, Pine Trails and the Wedge, and asked the City Commission to consider funding, signage and an educational campaign including stop-the-bleed kits.
The City of Parkland Parks & Recreation Advisory Board on July 7 unanimously voted to recommend that the City Commission install AEDs at Terramar Park, Pine Trails Park and at the Wedge community facility and adopt an education program for users of those parks.
Daniel Strachman, chair of the AED subcommittee, told the board the group identified specific mounting locations and stressed the need for public awareness and training. “We did suggest that we add to the AED cabinets a stop the bleed kit. And we're looking we think that'd be a great idea,” Strachman said.
The subcommittee identified one unit for Terramar (near the bathrooms and by the pickleball courts); two for Pine Trails (near bathrooms adjacent to Fields 3 and 4 and near the bathroom at Field 8); and two locations at the Wedge (in the community building bathroom area and a mounted unit near the basketball courts or pavilion area). The report recommended attaching cabinets to buildings rather than freestanding towers to reduce cost and installation time.
Christine Garcia, senior director of operational services and projects, said staff supports the recommendation as a referral to the commission and noted budgetary review will determine final placement and timing. “Our next steps would be, like you said, is, seeing budgetarily wise where we'll be able to fall with all that,” Garcia said.
Board members also asked staff to include signage that instructs callers to dial 911 and to add an education component so leagues and frequent users know the AEDs exist and how to use them. The motion passed with a voice vote recorded as unanimous. The board directed staff to forward the recommendation, with the suggested locations and the education proposal, to the City Commission for consideration during the budget process.
The advisory board’s vote is a recommendation only; the Transcript shows the board asked staff to pursue the commission referral and to report back during the budget process.
