Burleson ISD reports lessons learned from large reunification and security exercise

Burleson Independent School District officials reported on a full-scale reunification and safety exercise conducted the previous week, saying the event engaged more than 100 participants and included local emergency responders and school staff.
Dr. Jimerson explained that the exercise was planned and run by district safety staff, with Scott Shehay noted as the point person. Agencies that participated included the City of Burleson, Burleson Fire Department and Burleson Police Department, along with school safety officers, SROs, administrators and teachers. Officials said the event's debrief produced a list of lessons learned and questions to strengthen the district's reunification and emergency plans.
"We learned a lot as only you can learn from actually doing a mock exercise," Dr. Jimerson said during the meeting. He told trustees that staff will continue debriefing and will present more detailed recommendations next month when safety and security personnel are available.
No formal action was taken; trustees asked staff to continue the debrief, incorporate findings into the emergency plan and return with recommended updates and implementation details.
Ending note: Staff said the board will receive a more detailed update on the plan and any recommended changes when the district's safety and security staff return to a future meeting.
