Lincoln County commissioners approve letters urging reconsideration of BEAD map changes

Lincoln County commissioners approved and authorized signatures on seven letters to Nebraska state and federal officials asking them to reconsider proposed changes to the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) project-area maps.

The motion to approve and authorize signatures on the letters, which were addressed to the governor, state senator, Senators Fischer and Ricketts, and U.S. Representatives Don Bacon and Adrian Smith, passed in a roll-call vote with commissioners voting aye.

The board said the letters — prepared by a county task force and reviewed by county staff — were intended to show the local impact of reducing BEAD investment in parts of Nebraska. "The letter is very well crafted and I think it drives home our concerns that we have with the changes that have been proposed," Commissioner Chris Bruns said during the discussion. County staff member Tyler Volkmar reviewed the draft and suggested minor edits, the board said.

Board members said they hope recipients will thoroughly consider the county's concerns before final BEAD mapping decisions are made. The commissioners signed the seven-page package and arranged for distribution to the listed state and federal officials. A county staff member said one letter would be hand-delivered to the governor.

The action was procedural: the board voted to approve the letters as presented and to authorize appropriate county signatures. No further formal directive or follow-up schedule was recorded during the meeting.
