Commission approves 2026 WIC local agency application budget for submission to state

The Board of County Commissioners recessed to convene as the Board of County Health on July 7 and approved the local agency application and budget for the federal Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program for federal fiscal year 2026.
Caitlin Speth, WIC supervisor, told the board the agency will request $1,245,522 for the WIC budget and $98,974 for the breastfeeding peer counselor budget. She said the amounts represent the program's ideal budget and that the Kansas state agency will allocate final funding using a new formula tied to the number of clients and clinics served. "Our budget is on the federal fiscal year, so we'll start October 1 and roll through September 30," Speth said.
Speth said the request is larger than the agency's 2025 expenses primarily because of expected salary increases, potential cost-of-living adjustments and benefit changes, and she described options to reduce spending if the state award is smaller than requested. She also noted WIC's local economic impact, saying about $1.5 million in WIC redemptions circulate at local grocery stores.
A motion to approve submission of the 2026 WIC local agency application and budget was moved and seconded and the board voted in favor.
The application will be submitted to the state; Speth said she will bring a contract to the board for signature once the state assigns the allocation in September.
