Assembly adopts SJR 2 urging Congress to protect classified school employees

The California State Assembly on Wednesday adopted Senate Joint Resolution 2, which urges the U.S. Congress to enact federal legislation that affirms and protects the rights of classified school employees.
Assemblymember Ortega presented SJR 2 on behalf of Senator Cortese, noting it "urges Congress to enact federal legislation that affirms and protects the rights of classified school employees, the workers who keep our public schools running every single day." Ortega said more than 3,000,000 classified staff nationwide include paraeducators, bus drivers, custodians, clerical workers and food service staff and described SJR 2 as outlining "a comprehensive vision of fairness, dignity, and an opportunity for classified workers."
The Assembly allowed members to add coauthors; the clerk recorded 45 additional coauthors on the roll for the coauthor vote. On the required roll call for adoption of the joint resolution, the clerk announced ayes 44, noes 7 and the resolution was adopted.
Floor remarks framed the resolution as support for higher wages, stronger hours and benefits for school support staff and called for federal action to address nationwide treatment of classified employees. The resolution is a formal expression of the Assembly's position and does not itself change state law.
