Lyon County staff propose adopting 2024 building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes with local amendments

Lyon County community development staff presented a proposal Thursday to adopt the 2024 International Code Council building codes, the 2023 National Electrical Code, the 2024 uniform mechanical and plumbing codes, the 2024 Northern Nevada ICC amendments and a set of Lyon County amendments, with an effective date proposed of Jan. 1, 2026.

The proposal, presented by Gavin Anderson, Lyon County Community Development Director, said the updates align local regulations with national model codes that are revised on a three‑year cycle and that the changes are intended to improve construction safety, energy efficiency and resilience. Anderson said Northern Nevada jurisdictions collaborated on regional amendments addressing seismic design, snow loads, wind speeds and rural‑urban interface concerns.

Why it matters: Anderson told the board the 2024 codes update is intended to reflect “advancements in construction, safety, and sustainability,” and to keep Lyon County aligned with regional and national standards.
