Kootenai County extends temporary sheriff's position through Sept. 3 to cover vacancy

The Kootenai County Board of County Commissioners on July 3 approved a temporary staffing extension for a sheriff's office position through Sept. 3, 2025.
Captain Andy Deak, speaking for the sheriff's office, said the extension continues a prior temporary appointment that had been filled for three months and asked the board to extend it another two months while a full-time candidate completes background checks and training. "We're looking to extend it another 2 months," Deak said, adding the temporary worker will remain until the new hire finishes training and the former temporary employee leaves in August.
Deak said the extension is budget neutral and funded by salary savings from the vacancy: "it's budget neutral budget savings actually based on the position being unfilled and using salary savings." He estimated background check completion in "probably another 2 to 3 weeks" and about a month of training for the new hire.
Commissioners moved and seconded the request. Commissioner Duncan moved to approve the extension of position 555026 to Sept. 3, 2025; Chair Metairie seconded. The board voted unanimously: Commissioner Eberlein, Commissioner Duncan and Chair Metairie voted "aye," and the motion carried.
The extension keeps the temporary staffing in place while the sheriff's office finishes hiring the full-time candidate and completes on-the-job training.
