The council approved a resolution authorizing staff to apply for Texas Parks and Wildlife grant funding to revitalize Water Tower Park.
Debbie Huffman, Parks and Recreation Manager, told the council the city previously applied and was unsuccessful and has revised the application based on Texas Parks guidance. The proposed scope for the city‑owned portion of the park includes replacing swings, leveling ground for ADA access, resurfacing the basketball court, adding benches and picnic tables, and possibly themed play equipment. Huffman said a section of property at the rear of the park is owned by the water district and would not be part of the grant unless additional property arrangements are made.
Huffman said the Texas Parks and Wildlife grant application window is open through August and that the city can apply for different grant categories: staff described the small community grant (noted in the meeting as $150,000) and larger grant options up to $750,000 if additional property or scope is included. Councilors moved to authorize the application and allowed staff to refine grant particulars and bring amendments back if needed.
The council voted to approve the resolution; staff will finalize application material and may return to council if property changes or higher‑value grants are pursued.
