The City of South Padre Island voted to approve an amendment to the lease with the South Padre Island (SBI) Historical Museum that staff said will adjust rental payments and provide for parking to accommodate pickleball court users.
A museum representative identified in the meeting as Mr. Franke described construction progress: the building’s interior is near completion — “the walls, the floor, the ceiling … we're drying it out now for final painting and finishing” — and he said exhibits will take longer, with a projected grand opening in March. He told the council the museum and the city have “worked through some conversations and we're, I think we're agreed on both sides today” and described the arrangement as shared facilities.
A motion to approve the lease amendment was made and seconded; the council voted “all in favor” and the mayor said “motion carries.” Staff indicated the amendment will be available for the museum’s signature.
Councilors praised the public‑private partnership and the museum’s renovation, and no members opposed the motion. The council did not adopt additional parking or financing measures beyond the lease amendment at the meeting.
