Speakers at the event said the Grand Prairie Cinco de Mayo Committee has partnered with the city, local schools and businesses since 1987 to stage the celebration and to award college scholarships to graduating Grand Prairie High School students. An event speaker identified as Speaker 2 said, “We’re given 21 scholarships. We’re given $46,000, and this makes right at half a million dollars in scholarships to Grand Prairie students. So we’re so excited. 37 years of doing this event, and it keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger and better every year.”
Organizers framed the celebration as both a commemoration of Mexican culture and a community-wide gathering that supports local students through scholarship awards.
