Grand Prairie to hold Cinco de Mayo parade, committee to award $46,000 in scholarships

The 37th annual Cinco de Mayo parade in Grand Prairie will assemble at Northeast 17th Street and East Main, with lineup set for 8:30 a.m. and a 10 a.m. start, organizers said. The parade will proceed west on Main Street and conclude at City Hall Plaza, where festival activities and presentations will follow.
"We're awarding 21 students a total of, dollars 46,000 in scholarships this year," said Gloria Carrillo, a longtime organizer of the event. Carrillo said the parade and festival will also highlight student artwork and community entertainment.
Organizers asked VIPs and parade participants to use the north-side parking lot at Immaculate Conception for staging and parking. The event will feature food and retail vendors, school-district participation and a main stage program that will introduce elected officials and scholarship recipients.
Carrillo listed sponsors and partners who support the event, including Rooms to Go, PepsiCo and Traders Village, and said community businesses and school districts play a central role in producing the celebration. The parade lineup will be led by South Grand Prairie ROTC. Carl Juarez of Rooms to Go will serve as grand marshal and Lieutenant Mark Tudonio as deputy grand marshal, Carrillo said.
The parade committee is large and long-running, Carrillo said, naming several volunteers and partners including John Lopez (city council), Araceli Mercado (Century 21 Judge Feit) and others who manage vendors, booklets and logistics. She said the committee has awarded about half a million dollars in scholarships to Grand Prairie students over time.
People interested in vending were directed to contact Araceli Mercado at Century 21 Judge Feit; Carrillo said vendor space was nearly full and that vendor registration deadlines were imminent. The committee expects printed event booklets to be available to the public soon.
The organizers emphasized the parade’s community focus and scholarship support as reasons for continued public participation. No fees, permit changes or formal city actions were announced during the segment.
