The Michigan House of Representatives on July 1, 2025 adopted House Resolution 141, introduced by Representative Brenda Carter, to declare July 1, 2025 as Invisible Wounds Day in Michigan and to urge awareness of post-traumatic stress disorder and related supports.
Representative Brenda Carter spoke in favor of the resolution, describing PTSD as ‘‘a solemn and vital opportunity to speak proof to the pain of those afflicted by PTSD that too often go unseen.’’ Carter said PTSD ‘‘is often associated with military combat, but trauma wears many faces’’ and listed survivors of violence, abuse, serious accidents and profound loss among those affected. She recounted a personal loss, saying, ‘‘When I lost my son, Brian, my world changed forever,’’ and urged the chamber to replace stigma with understanding and to support access to evidence-based treatments.
Why it matters: the resolution aims to raise public awareness of PTSD across multiple populations including veterans, first responders and survivors of violence, and to promote understanding of treatment options such as behavioral therapies and EMDR.
The resolution was taken up under the motions and resolutions order and adopted by voice vote after the sponsor’s remarks. The chair called for ‘‘aye’’ and the resolution was declared adopted.
Ending: Representative Carter asked colleagues to support the measure ‘‘not just for me, but for the millions of people who are suffering from PTSD.’’ The House adopted the resolution and then adjourned the day’s business.
