Farm Bureau asks Saline County for $10,000 to support annual free tire collection

Leslie Manning, county coordinator for the Saline County Farm Bureau, asked the Saline County Commission on July 1 to contribute $10,000 toward a free tire collection planned for September 2025.
Manning said the Farm Bureau has hosted a free tire collection every other year since 2018 at the Road & Bridge yard and that Champlin Tire collects and hauls materials. She told the board the Earl Bain Foundation had awarded the project $15,000 this year and asked the county to contribute $10,000 to ensure the county would not have to turn away residents if there are two years'worth of tires to haul.
Manning provided historical figures: a 2023 collection cost of $19,475 based on a bid of $205 per ton and 95 tons collected; a 2022 combined total of roughly $35,000 spent countywide when multiple groups hosted collections; and a Champlin bid in 2025 of $220 per ton. Manning calculated that disposing of 100 tons at $220 per ton would cost about $22,000 and said she hoped the combination of the Earl Bain grant, county contribution and Farm Bureau resources would cover the event.
She said landfill disposal remains an option for residents at posted per-ton fees and that county Road & Bridge staff assist with loading at a modest labor cost. Manning asked commissioners to consider an initial $10,000 contribution and encouraged budgeting an annual line item for the collection to support the county's zero-waste strategy.
