Ellis County picks Verizon for two-year cell contract; county staff cited cost advantage

Ellis County commissioners voted 3-0 on July 1 to approve a two-year county cell-phone contract with Verizon Wireless.
Lori Dreiling, the county assistant IT director, presented two proposals — NextTech Wireless and Verizon — and told commissioners the Verizon proposal was $1,412 less over the two-year contract period. “It is our recommendation that the county choose the Verizon 2 year contract proposal,” Dreiling said.
Commissioners asked whether both carriers had been tested in the county and whether sheriff’s deputies used both providers; Dreiling said both had been tested and the sheriff’s department currently uses both NextTech and Verizon. Dan Rennie, Verizon’s government account manager, attended and said he would be available to support county needs.
The contract term is two years; staff said the county would rebid the contract after that period. Commissioner Michael Burgess moved to approve the Verizon two-year contract and the motion passed 3-0.
The meeting packet indicated the decision reflects typical county practice to evaluate cost and coverage; Dreiling said Verizon’s proposal was the lower-cost option in the staff comparison.
