Columbus — City Council adopted the 2026 tax budget and authorized the City Auditor to submit the budget to the Franklin County Budget Commission ahead of the statutory July 20 deadline.
Tom Norcott, director of financial systems in the auditor’s office, presented highlights of the budget estimate and said revenue projections include a 4% increase in income-tax revenue over the 2025 revised estimate. The total revenue estimate shown in the tax budget was $1,217,806,000, described in committee as a 0.43% increase over the 2025 revised estimate.
Why it matters: The tax budget is a statutory, preparatory step required under Ohio Revised Code Section 5705 and is used by the county budget commission to set amounts and rates. Auditor staff said the estimate draws on employment trends, employer filings, and municipal corporate-tax returns.
Council action: Council conducted a short public hearing inside the meeting, moved to adopt Resolution 0109X-2025, and the clerk called the roll; the resolution was adopted. The auditor will submit the tax budget to the county before July 20 and return to council after the county’s review for formal acceptance of amounts and rates.
Ending: The adoption is administrative and procedural but is legally required for the city's tax and budget timeline; council members asked questions about the reconciliation process and auditor-staff confirmed ongoing reconciliation with actual filings.
