Council swaps police chief for IT director on records-management committee

The City Council unanimously approved on July 1 an ordinance (2025‑23) amending Section 2.506 of the San Marcos City Code to substitute the chief of police with the director of information technology on the records-management committee.
City staff explained the records-management program includes a committee that signs off on retention and purging decisions for city records. A councilmember asked whether police records would still be treated differently; staff confirmed police records would remain subject to state law and separate retention practices. Assistant city staff said the change reflected the growing role of IT in electronic records and digital retention workflows.
The ordinance passed 7–0 on first reading; staff said the measure is part of ongoing work to update retention schedules and records processes.
