Residents urge traffic calming, crosswalk fixes and better public engagement

Three residents used the meeting's public-comment period to press the city on traffic and public-engagement issues.

Connie Cantrell said she submitted a petition asking the city to review a crosswalk in front of the Bradley House and that traffic-calming reports prompted police enforcement. "I experienced something this week that you experience on a regular basis," Cantrell told the meeting, adding that the crosswalk continues to be a safety concern.

Robin Bernstein, speaking for the Littleton Crossing neighborhood and from a pedestrian perspective, urged more enforcement for speeding and distracted driving and suggested police-issued fines plus mandatory classes for offenders. She also proposed using officers as crossing guards at the Woodlawn shopping center and called on residents to consider modes other than driving.

Kim Chad criticized the city's outreach and said the public lacks data needed to assess transportation and land-use decisions. Chad said the city's land-use code and plan update process should do a better job of providing information "first" to the public and then collecting public input, adding: "It is a management failure." She urged that the comprehensive plan update explicitly connect transportation and land use and that the city provide more inclusive public engagement.

Ending Speakers urged staff and board members to prioritize traffic-calming work, improve project-level transparency and use multiple outreach methods so residents can meaningfully review proposals before they are adopted or implemented.
