Council approves annexation of 1036 McJon Lane into Rexburg (Ordinance 13-32)

The Rexburg City Council on June 25 approved annexation of 1036 McJon Lane into the city of Rexburg, adopting the measure as Ordinance No. 13-32 (first reading). The annexation was requested by the property owner to connect a new home to city sewer.
A city planner explained the property is located north of the Pine Brook subdivision and that district staff told the property owner he is “close enough to city services” to be denied a new septic system and must instead hook up to the city sewer by annexing into the city. The planner said the homeowner agreed to annex so the new home can move forward.
The city opened a public hearing and asked for testimony in favor, neutral and against the annexation. No speakers testified in person at the hearing, but a written letter from Janet and Merlin Anderson opposing the annexation was available in the council packet and referenced during the hearing.
Council members moved and seconded the ordinance for first reading and voted to approve the annexation. One council member asked whether bordering property owners had been notified; staff replied they had conducted proper notice and most adjacent owners were not inclined to annex at this time.
The vote on the annexation was recorded as passing. The city clerk will continue processing the annexation ordinance and update the records to allow sewer connection once technical and permit requirements are satisfied.
