The Riley County Commission spent an extended administrative session on June 26 debating where to hold commission meetings and where to stage offices during an upcoming courthouse window and remodel project.
County staff presented two options: temporary setup at the Family & Community Resource Center (FCRC) or use of space at the Health Department/Admin Building. Commissioners expressed mixed preferences; concerns raised included parking availability, acoustics, noise from a nearby server room, accessibility (including an elevator that will be out for a portion of the work), confidentiality and HIPAA-sensitive areas and the adequacy of temporary tables and seating. Several commissioners said they had toured both locations and asked staff to finalize details.
Public Works and IT staff described the technical work required: move cameras and microphones, install a camera for broadcast, relocate security cameras, add additional microphones, and install signage and wayfinding. Staff estimated three days of setup work to make a chosen site fully operational and said they planned to stage moves the week of the July 14 construction start; community corrections and emergency management will shift as part of the staging plan.
Commissioners directed staff to prepare both locations for use, install signage telling the public where to park and enter, and to take steps to reduce confidentiality risks (locked office doors, signage, blocking access corridors as needed). Staff said boxes and packing materials would be provided and that commissioners would retain access to their offices during the transition. No formal vote was required; commissioners asked to tour both rooms and to reach a quick decision so public notices and already-scheduled events can be updated.
