The Germantown Art Commission announced the selection of artist Sean Coffee to produce a mobile mural project and said the city is investigating a failing decorative crosswalk on Farmington at Wolf River.
Why it matters: the mobile mural is intended to increase public art visibility at city events and locations; the crosswalk issue raises questions about installation quality and product durability on high-traffic streets.
Mobile mural selection and deployment: Art Commission members said the selection followed a public process that drew roughly 1,900 resident votes among three invited concept proposals. The commission chose Sean Coffee and staff (Art Director Cat Pena) has begun preparing substrates and mounting hardware so panels can be painted. Planned locations and events mentioned for the mobile mural include the Germantown Festival (fall), Houston High School events, the Pickering Center courtyard and a wall outside the economic development center. The artist was compensated for the concept submission; staff will finalize layouts and bring refinements back to the artist before painting begins.
Creative crosswalk issues and contractor follow-up: commissioners reported that a recently installed decorative crosswalk at Farmington and Wolf River is showing separations and material failure in multiple travel lanes. Staff described the product as a bonded plastic/thermoplastic sheet (PPG thermoplastic was cited as a likely product) that should bond to asphalt for the pavement life, but the crosswalk is showing signs of detachment on both sides of the crossing. The city is awaiting a contractor response to determine whether the cause is product failure or improper installation; the city indicated the work is currently within the construction warranty period while staff also consult other cities that have used the same product.
Staff next steps: Art Commission staff will continue coordination with the selected artist and finalize installation logistics for the mobile mural. City operations staff will pursue contractor follow-up and reach out to other municipalities and the product representative to identify a remedy under warranty or a corrective installation method.
No formal commission actions were taken on either matter at the meeting; both were reported as updates.
