Mableton seeks recycling grant and applies for federal Safe Streets planning funds

The Mableton City Council on June 25 approved two grant measures: a resolution to apply for a Georgia Beverage Association Community Grant to support a mobile recycling trailer and a resolution to apply for a federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) planning grant.
Sustainability, Waste and Beautification Director Emily Grosz described the Georgia Beverage Association program “Made to be Remade,” which awards community grants up to $25,000 with no local match. Grosz said the city would propose a branded mobile recycling trailer to collect beverage containers (glass, aluminum and plastic) at events and cleanups and to partner with local recyclers if awarded.
Grosz also presented a plan to apply for SS4A funding for a citywide comprehensive safety action plan. Grant writer Christopher Brewer estimated a $300,000 project cost; SS4A requires a local match and staff noted a 20% match ($60,000) would be required if the city is awarded funds. The planning grant would fund a traffic and safety study, stakeholder engagement and a safety action plan that could support future implementation grant applications.
Council voted unanimously to approve both resolutions authorizing staff to submit applications. If the city wins the SS4A award, staff said they will return to council to identify matching funds and accept the grant agreement.
