The Los Angeles City Homelessness Committee on June 25 approved two mayoral appointments and moved them forward to the full City Council.
Aileen Morales was nominated for the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) board of commissioners. Morales, who said she was born and raised in East Los Angeles and lives at Ramona Gardens, described herself as a teacher at George Washington Carver Middle School and a resident advisor at Ramona Gardens. "I'm seeking to serve on the board of commissioners of the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles in hopes of ensuring voices like ours have are heard and valued," Morales said during her one-minute introduction. The committee voted 3-0 to approve moving the nomination on to full council; committee members also encouraged Morales to complete HACLA's financial disclosure paperwork before the full council vote.
Roberto Barragan was nominated to the United to House LA citizen oversight committee. Barragan introduced himself as executive director of ICON CDC, a community development corporation in Pacoima that runs business assistance centers and small-business programs. Committee members praised Barragan's experience and likewise approved advancing his nomination 3-0, again noting the need to complete financial-disclosure filings prior to full-council consideration.
Vote and next steps: Both items passed committee by voice or roll-call vote with three ayes and will proceed to the full City Council for confirmation. Committee members flagged administrative steps — specifically completion of required financial-disclosure paperwork for both nominees — that should be addressed before the full council vote.
Ending: The committee's approval clears the way for the two nominees to be considered at the next available full-council meeting; both appointees thanked the committee for the opportunity to serve.
