Stephanie Isles, director of elections, told the City Council of Norfolk the Larchmont Library will undergo extensive renovations including HVAC replacement and that elections staff propose relocating the Larchmont polling place to Larchmont United Methodist Church on Jamestown Crescent.
Isles said the church is "excited about having us. We're excited about moving," and that the proposed site is within the precinct boundary lines. She said elections staff had contacted the local Civic League and that "everybody seems very supportive." Isles said the city will open a public-comment period and return to council for a public hearing and vote on July 15. If the council approves the relocation, Isles said the city will notify voters and the new site would be used beginning with the November gubernatorial election.
No formal action was taken at the work session; the item was a relocation proposal and scheduling of a public hearing and council vote. Isles presented recent turnout data for the Larchmont precinct and confirmed that the church site is inside the precinct boundary.
The relocation planning is intended to maintain voter access while Larchmont Library is closed for renovations; council will decide the relocation at its July 15 meeting.
