Oshkosh schools to move spring staff engagement survey to April to allow same-year follow-up

District staff told the board on June 25 that the district's spring Gallup Q12 employee engagement survey showed a drop in engagement from earlier in the year and recommended moving the annual spring administration from May to April so leaders can act on results before the school year ends.
"We are going to shift our spring survey from May to April, which will allow us to take that data, look at those strategies and action steps, and still start putting them into place that same school year," said Sabrina Johnson, who presented the engagement report.
Johnson told the board the district's spring survey had about 1,140 participants and that while engagement declined versus fall, Oshkosh remained above national averages for districts using the Gallup instrument. She and CESA 6 staff said neighboring districts typically administer the spring survey in April; district staff said aligning to that schedule will permit analysis and implementation before summer.
Board members asked about year-to-year patterns and whether timing alone explained the drop; some members supported the shift to April to provide timely support to staff, while others cautioned that maintaining some timing consistency helps trend analysis.
Why it matters: staff engagement is a district key performance indicator and is tied to retention and student outcomes; staff reported the district's long-term goal is 60% engagement and a near-term target above 50%.
Next steps: staff said they will administer the spring survey in April going forward, continue building local action plans at individual schools, and report back on any changes in the spring results and short-term actions taken in response.
