A woman who identified herself as Yuriane told the Los Angeles City Council on June 25 that her father, Mario, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a workplace raid on June 6, 2025 and described the conditions she said he experienced while detained.
Councilmember Isabel Jurado introduced the public comment and framed the testimony as part of the councils responsibility to protect workers and families. Jurado said: “Me paro hoy cargando la tristeza de nuestra comunidad y la responsabilidad para proteger las personas que hacen completa nuestra ciudad.”
Speaking from the public podium, Yuriane said her family could not find her father for a week after the raid. She described his conditions at the detention facility and the impact on her familys children. Yuriane told the council: “Mi pap está en una jaula, enjalado con ms de 80 personas, y ni siquiera s si ha comido el da de hoy.” She said her youngest sibling is four years old and has a disability and that the family is struggling without their father.
Testimony recounted by the speaker included claims that some detainees lacked medication, received little food and faced barriers to accessing legal counsel. Yuriane said advocates at the facility attempted to provide legal guidance but that many families were left without information about the detained workers whereabouts.
Jurado urged city leadership to defend Los Angeles sanctuary protections and called on officials, including Mayor Karen Bass as referenced in the public record, to take action to protect immigrant workers and families. The meeting transcript records Jurado asking officials to "hacer algo para continuar defender el estado de Los Ángeles como una ciudad santuario."
The council did not record any formal motions or votes in response to the speakers testimony during the same meeting. The remarks were entered in the public comment portion of the session and will be reflected in the official minutes.
Clarifying details from the testimony: the workplace raid was dated June 6, 2025; the detained facility was described in the transcript as a detention site where some detainees were held crowded together; the speaker named the detained individual as Mario and identified herself as his daughter, Yuriane. The speaker requested that city officials uphold sanctuary protections and support families affected by immigration enforcement.
No formal action was taken on the record at the June 25 meeting in direct response to this testimony; councilmembers may pursue follow-up through staff inquiries or later agenda items.
