Planning commissioners press for integrated transportation review, request presentation from transit provider

Several planning commissioners used the commission-items section to raise recurring concerns about parking and to urge a coordinated review of transportation, transit and land-use policy.

Commissioners said current development review often treats parking as the proxy for transportation planning and urged a broader approach that integrates land use and mobility. One commissioner noted the high annual cost of car ownership and argued the county should seek ways to reduce auto dependence by aligning development decisions with transit and pedestrian access. Another commissioner said the group should organize a work session with High Valley Transit (the local transit provider) and county transportation staff to review bus stops, schedules, budgets and operational constraints.

Commissioners requested that the transit provider be invited to present and that planning staff collect questions in advance so the session can be focused. The commission also suggested the transit provider bring budget information and explain service constraints and funding sources to help commissioners understand limitations and opportunities.

Staff said the planning office will work on arranging a presentation and asked commissioners to submit questions individually to staff so staff can coordinate an agenda. Commissioners also noted the county-wide general plan update as the right moment to align policy goals for land use and transportation.

The discussion did not produce formal policy action but resulted in a request to staff to schedule and coordinate the informational session with transit and transportation staff.
