The Darien School District will return elementary instrumental music to a five‑day weekly schedule and change visual art from rotational periods to 60‑minute blocks, district leaders told the board June 24.
Presenters said vocal music for the current year remains unchanged and that instrumental music will again use itinerant specialists and before/after‑school full band and orchestra rehearsals instead of using “wind time” during the school day. Elementary visual art will move to a single 60‑minute block to allow more cohesive lessons and expanded use of media, replacing shorter rotational art periods.
District staff said itinerant and shared staffing models will continue to cover the five schools; they reported only one school currently has a dedicated art teacher and that the change to a 60‑minute block does not require hiring additional staff. The district also said PLC time for visual‑arts teachers will be scheduled across schools and that consultants will support extended learning programs (ELP).
Board members questioned whether the return to 60‑minute blocks was a budget decision; staff answered that total contact minutes remain the same and the change was a scheduling shift intended to improve instructional coherence.
Implementation: Staff said schedules were developed using existing itinerant staff and that more detailed schedules and staffing plans will be shared with principals and teachers during summer planning.
