Darien board approves three‑year custodians union contract covering 2025–2028

The Darien Board of Education voted unanimously June 24 to approve a three‑year contract between the district and the Darien School custodians union covering July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2028.

The contract includes multi‑year wage increases described during the meeting as “a general wage increase of 3.5, 3, and 3,” and was described as having a total cost to the district of about $250,000. The administration also said premium shares for health coverage will change to 21 percent, 21.5 percent and 22 percent across the three years and that the employee deductible will be raised to $9,000. The administration said there are “some language changes that are helpful to the district operationally.” Alan (Superintendent) presented the highlights to the board.

The board moved to approve the contract after discussion and an earlier executive session on the item. John (Board member) made the motion to approve the contract; Dennis (Board member) seconded it. The presiding secretary announced the vote as unanimous.

Why it matters: The agreement sets wages and benefit cost sharing for classroom‑support staff who maintain school buildings and are often among the first staff on site each day. Board members and administration thanked custodial staff for their work and noted the operational importance of the language changes the contract contains.

Board direction and follow up: The administration presented the financial impact estimate to the board at the meeting; board members did not request substantive policy changes to the contract language on the floor. The board recorded the contract period and asked staff to proceed with implementation.
