School board consolidates communicable-disease rules into single policy 8,450

The Pinellas County School Board voted unanimously on June 24 to repeal three existing policies on communicable diseases and adopt a single consolidated policy, numbered 8,450.
Superintendent and staff presented the change as an administrative consolidation intended to remove redundancies and make district guidance easier to use. The proposal, described at prior workshops and at a first reading in May, brought the three policies together into one comprehensive document.
Leanna Eisen, director of strategic planning and policy, told the board the new Policy 8,450 "combines the three repealed policies into a cohesive and comprehensive policy pertaining to communicable diseases." She said the proposed policy retains major components of the prior policies while removing redundancies, adds definitions used throughout health services documentation, removes curriculum language because the district "uses a state approved health curriculum that complies with law," and removes procedures from the policy text.
Board member Edmond thanked Eisen and the team and noted the district works with the health department to remain compliant while managing communicable diseases.
Motion and vote: Board member Edmond moved to approve item 6.2; board member Kane seconded. The motion passed 6-0.
