Council approves $236,749 transit contract for Route 15; staff will study route timing

Midwest City Council voted June 24 to approve a fiscal-year 2025–26 contract in the amount of $236,749 with the Central Oklahoma Transportation and Parking Authority (COPTA) to provide Route 15 bus service in Midwest City.
Council members and staff told the meeting they have attended COPTA public meetings about service changes on the longer routes and received resident feedback that Route 15 takes substantially longer than comparable routes. Council members described journeys that currently take up to about 80 minutes end-to-end, noting that other jurisdictions’ routes run faster.
City staff said they will continue to attend COPTA coordination meetings and will conduct a study of ridership, routing and costs over the next year. The study will examine options such as route configuration changes to shorten travel time without immediately adding an additional bus, which councilors said would require significant unbudgeted funds.
Council members praised city staff for active participation in the COPTA process and reiterated a commitment to maintain service for residents who rely on public transit. The motion to approve the contract carried unanimously.
The city manager’s office identified Julie Shannon from Community Development as the city’s point person for the study and said staff would return to council with findings and potential service options for Midwest City riders.
