A senator presented SB 353 to extend the Farm-to-Food-Bank tax credit — which offers a 15% tax credit to farmers who donate food to food banks — for an additional five years through Jan. 1, 2032.
The presenter said the program, created by AB 152 in 2012, helped generate $8.2 million in donated food in 2023 and issued about $769,000 in tax credits to participating farmers that year. Supporters argued extending the credit helps food banks plan for regular donations of fresh produce, reduces food waste, and improves access to nutritious food in rural and underserved communities.
Erica Parker of Californians Against Waste spoke in support. The committee accepted amendments offered by the chair and referred the bill to the committee’s suspense file for further processing and fiscal review. No opposition witnesses were recorded during the hearing.
