Human Resources staff told the board on June 18 that district recruiting is a year-round process and that, as of the meeting, roughly 30 new teachers had been hired and another 30 remained to fill before the start of the year. HR described a recruitment timeline that begins each Labor Day with a "catch-all" job posting and includes a "Get to Know MCSD" outreach series, principal-level intent-to-remain checks in February, and earlier hiring in March as the preferred timeline to allow candidates more time to secure housing.
HR said bus-driver staffing has improved, with Key West showing no driver vacancies and other zones near capacity; Jason Thomason (transportation) was credited for recruiting and training drivers. The presentation noted that paras and some support positions sometimes reflect local housing pressures and seasonal turnover.
Board members asked for finer detail on several counts, especially Key West High School: they requested a list of the 13 current Key West High openings (the board member called that number out for follow-up) and the applicant pools for each vacancy. HR said it would provide position-level applicant counts and the exit-survey analysis that tracks common reasons for departure; HR staff said housing continues to be the top factor in exit-form responses.
Ending
HR staff said they expect to fill the remaining positions in the six weeks before the school year begins, will provide the requested breakdown of open positions and applicant counts, and will circulate retention/exit-form analysis to the board.
