At the start of the June 24 meeting, the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation presented a $235,116 donation to the city to support library and cultural arts programs, collections and facilities.
Suzanne Smithson, the city’s Library and Cultural Arts director, introduced the donation and noted it supplements general fund support for library and cultural arts programs. "This year, their donation is $235,000... it helps us provide wonderful library, arts, music, programs, and events," Smithson said.
Geeta Nasiri, president of the Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation, said the foundation, a 501(c)(3) established in 1998, has provided more than $2 million to date and manages close to $5 million in endowment funds. Nasiri gave a detailed breakdown: the distribution of $235,116 comes from three endowments (the Robert H. Gartner Endowment Fund to support programs and events in the Schulman Auditorium; the Benson Family Foundation Endowment Fund to support the library collection and Learning Center; and the Cannon Endowment Fund to support the Cannon Gallery) and one distribution from the foundation’s general fund.
The foundation is also donating $40,000 to install an interactive percussion play installation in the Coe Library Sculpture Garden, expected in the fall, and $4,500 to re‑introduce pop‑up art at the TGIF concert series and to help fund dance lessons at some events.
Smithson thanked the foundation and named staff and volunteers who support library and culture programs; Nasiri acknowledged foundation trustees by name. The council accepted the donation as part of the consent calendar later in the meeting.
