Parents, students urge restoration of German program and library support at McKinney ISD meeting

Several community members and students used the June 23 public comment period to press the McKinney ISD Board about program cuts, library staffing and an individual transcript error affecting scholarship eligibility.
Student speakers described program disruptions. Daniel Amwer (student) told the board that the district did not fund transportation and lodging for the 2025 state German contest, leaving the program able to send only one student to competition and interrupting a multi'year record of high finishes. He said the German program has historically produced awards statewide and supports local cultural traditions; he asked the board to restore basic resources so the program can return to prior levels.
Eli Worthy, a graduating student, said a final high school transcript contained an incorrect sequence of grade levels after he briefly pursued early graduation and then reversed that decision. Worthy told trustees that the error is preventing distribution of a National Eagle Scout Association scholarship and asked district staff for help correcting the final transcript, noting he had been directed to multiple campus and central office staff.
Valerie Larpenter, library media specialist at Vega Elementary, described the campus'level impact of cuts: the library assistant position at Vega will be eliminated for next year and the library'book PPA budget for purchases was cut to zero. Larpenter said the assistant'run circulation, makerspace and book club activities, and that without the assistant she will face either closing the library to teach or turning down classroom collaboration. She asked the board to treat the cuts as temporary and to reinstate the library assistant and restore the book purchase budget for 2026'27.
A representative from Public Schools First McKinney criticized recent state legislation (including the vouchers passed as SB2) and called for local organizing to oppose policies the speaker said would divert funds from public education. Another community speaker, reading a notice on behalf of Tom Cline, said the district had not timely responded to an open records request about a press release regarding STAR data and threatened legal action via the county district attorney or Texas attorney general if the records were not released.
Ending: Board members listened but made no immediate reversals of the budget cuts during the meeting; administrators noted the adopted budget included reductions and that items could be considered for restoration in future amendments once additional revenue or savings are identified.
