McKinney ISD board declines state option to allow nonenrolled students in UIL programs

The presentation noted practical concerns if nonenrolled students participate: available roster spots could be taken from enrolled students, district resources and coaches'time could be diverted, and the district would need to apply its higher conduct expectations and discipline requirements to participants who are not otherwise enrolled. The administration recommended the board adopt a policy that keeps UIL participation limited to students who are fully enrolled in the district.
Trustees debated the competing interests of access and the district's responsibility to its enrolled population. Several trustees said extracurricular activities are part of the public schools'educational mission and that roster spots and district resources should prioritize enrolled McKinney ISD students. A motion to adopt the recommended FM local verbiage passed; Trustee Esmeralda moved the motion and Trustee Harvey Wahaca seconded, according to the meeting record.
