Airport manager: Jet-fuel sales rising after new fuel system; county refueling helped a medevac

Clyde, who manages airport fuel operations, told the Board of Commissioners on June 19 that the county recently brought jet fuel online and has sold 998 gallons in about three weeks while maintaining a reserve of 6,235 gallons in the tank.
Clyde said the airport's availability of fuel contributed to a life-saving event when a Flight for Life helicopter had to land and refuel at the county facility because it could not switch fuel tanks while airborne and did not have the fuel to continue to Denver. "It did save a life," Clyde said, and commissioners asked for details during later reports.
Clyde said Avgas 100 low lead was purchased June 10 at a favorable price, allowing the airport to offer a price that is 11 cents cheaper per gallon than a competitor in Walsenburg and 17 cents cheaper than another Fremont County supplier. He said the lower prices and availability should attract more traffic, noting more than 500 gallons sold in June alone.
He also reported operational items: filter replacement schedules for AVGAS and jet fuel, mowing and vehicle maintenance for the airport fleet, and plans to pour additional concrete around the jet fuel pad to prevent washout after heavy rains. Clyde said the airport has the ability to provide cost-plus discounts for certain customers, such as firefighting, if needed.
The airport manager asked for routine oversight and said fuel operations are still within budget and are helping to draw business to the county airport.
