Washington County’s Executive Committee approved a plan to repair and regrade three horse arenas at Fair Park and authorized using available strategic-priority funds to cover the work.
Scott (county presenter) summarized recent work to address ponding and sand loss in the western arena and outlined a proposed follow-up project to finish the warm-up ring and the eastern ring. The plan includes adding sand, improving tiling, and other repairs; the presentation noted $16,000 was spent on related work last year and the current request is approximately $15,000. Fair Park staff and horse enthusiasts have helped develop the plan, obtained quotes and committed to roughly a quarter of the funding and material donations, county staff said.
Supervisor Scholtes and others praised the cooperation between Fair Park staff and the stakeholder groups, including draft-horse exhibitors and 4‑H, and said repairing the arenas is important for the agricultural elements of the county fair. Aaron (county staff) told the committee that funds could be found in the strategic priorities balance, which he reported as $278,000. The motion to approve using strategic-priority funds passed by voice vote after supervisors Schwab and Kelly moved and seconded the motion respectively; the transcript records approval with no opposition and no roll-call tally.
