The Bend Landmarks Commission on June 17 approved a major historic alteration request for the Lucas House at 42 Northwest Hawthorne Avenue (project ELHIS20240674), allowing an ADA ramp across the south façade, replacement of three exterior doors and sidelights, and the addition of a dormer, subject to conditions intended to protect historic masonry and visibility of character-defining features.
Michelle Patrick, associate planner in the planning division, told commissioners the property is a locally designated historic and cultural resource and “one of the oldest photos on the record” provided by the Deschutes Historical Museum shows its early significance. Patrick said the proposal is reviewed under the Bend Urban Area Comprehensive Plan (chapter 3), the Bend Development Code historic preservation code (chapter 10.20), and the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
