Bannock County commissioners review preliminary budget, discuss travel, nonprofit funding, vehicles and personnel

Bannock County commissioners spent a large portion of a budget work session Thursday reviewing preliminary line items for next year, discussing how travel and conference costs should be allocated, whether longstanding nonprofit contributions should be reexamined and whether to approve several capital and personnel requests.

The discussion covered several departments and items the board said it would revisit before finalizing the budget. Commissioners debated moving some travel and conference funding out of the central commission budget and into individual department budgets, reviewed a proposed increase for a local historical society payroll line, considered a request for a larger vehicle for the county pool and heard a presentation from the prosecutor's office that included a request to meet in executive session on personnel matters.

The preliminary review matters because it shapes where county tax dollars and one-time reserves may be used next year.
