Town Manager Erin Nelson told the Bluff Town Council that building‑department staff had requested an adjustment to how a previously approved $18,000 annual compensation pool is allocated between the building official and the building permit technician.
Nelson said the original allocation was $6,000 to one role and $12,000 to the other. Department staff told the manager that the permit‑processing workload was skewed toward the permit technician and requested an even split of the $18,000. Nelson said both employees had expressed support for the split.
"What they're asking for is an amendment to their salaries to evenly split the $18,000 between them at this point in time," Nelson told the council.
Action The council voted unanimously to modify the building‑department employment arrangement and to apply the new 50/50 split from this point forward; the manager said that if the council chose not to approve the change, the last pay cycle would be adjusted retroactively.
Next steps and oversight Council members asked for periodic re‑evaluation and Nelson said the town will continue to monitor permit workload and staffing needs, with a formal evaluation scheduled in a few months and continued review at budget time.
Ending: The stipend reallocation was approved and staff will reexamine workload and compensation as permit activity continues.
