The Montezuma County Board of County Commissioners on June 17 discussed a request related to a racetrack lease at the county fairgrounds and decided not to take immediate action, giving the tenant time to attempt to assign the lease.
Commissioners recapped a workshop conversation: the tenant asked to return the lease to a one‑year contract or to assign it because of circumstances beyond his control. County staff and the county attorney presented options including letting the lease expire at year’s end, allowing assignment, readvertising the lease or amending it for a one‑year term. The commissioners agreed it would be premature to decide at the meeting and opted to give the tenant roughly one month to pursue an assignment and to coordinate with county staff and the fairgrounds manager.
No formal motion to modify or relet the lease was made; commissioners said they would reassess after the tenant works with staff on assignment options.
