Board approves split and service improvements for Hillsborough Circulator route

The Orange County Board of County Commissioners approved improvements to the Hillsborough Circulator on June 17 after holding a public hearing at which no members of the public spoke.
Sarah Williamson of the county's Transportation Department told the board the circulator is the county program's highest‑ridership route and that service was enhanced in fiscal year 2024 to operate from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The proposed change splits the existing route into two separate routes, which the department said will increase operational efficiency, reduce passenger wait times from 60 to 45 minutes, add a stop at the Orange County Health Department and designate a transfer point at the Orange County Library.
The board opened the public hearing; no members of the public signed up to speak. Commissioners then voted to close the hearing and approved the fixed‑route service changes by voice vote.
The Transportation Department said the change is intended to boost ridership and operational efficiency; staff announced a ribbon‑cutting event the following Tuesday and said electric vehicles would be available for public viewing at the event.
No funding changes or service hours reductions were reported at the meeting; staff said the revised routing and transfer point are operational changes intended to improve reliability and travel times for riders.
