Irmo staff update: new town administrator to start in July; town hall drawings due, classification study implemented

Town staff told the council that the town is wrapping up several planning and administrative tasks and that leadership changes are imminent.

Staff reported the events committee completed reviews of recent events, including a positive after-action on the skate park event and Peepapalooza. The committee finalized July 4 preparations and will present a laser show contract for council approval. The committee is also planning the December 6 Christmas parade and a future large event (the Okra Strut) referenced in staff remarks.

The town is completing two related planning studies: an intersection and streetscape improvement study and a wayfinding and signage study with consultants Arnett Muldrow and the Bowman Group; both are expected to wrap up within approximately 30 days. Staff also said it has completed and implemented a classification and compensation study effective July 1 and that employees have been briefed on those changes.

On facilities, staff said construction drawings (CDs) for the new town hall were due the day of the meeting and that project teams are preparing documents to prequalify bidders and move the project toward a public bid within roughly the next month to six weeks. The town continues to work with LCK and a project management team on the new town hall.

Administrator Courtney Dennis was publicly recognized for 23 years of service and retirement; staff and council read a proclamation honoring his tenure. Staff announced Jim Crossland will begin as the town’s appointed administrator on July 7 and that training and orientation will begin before his official start.

No formal council action was required on these updates; the items were presented as administrative briefings and ceremonial recognition.
