Mayor Alex Funaghi said the city will hold a brief groundbreaking ceremony for the Anita Street staircase and associated sewer lift station and beach access improvements. "We'll have a brief ceremony June Monday, 11AM," Funaghi said on StuNews Fair Game.
Host Tom Johnson noted the Anita Street access appears worn and that the route will be closed during work. "People also need to be advised that if you're gonna go to the beach that way, it's going to be closed for over a year," Johnson said; he added he did not expect the work to be finished until the end of 2026. Funaghi said the city must invest in infrastructure such as sewer lift stations because failures can cause significant problems if left unaddressed.
Funaghi described the project as necessary maintenance and said the city opts to invest intentionally in long‑term infrastructure. The interview provided timing for a kickoff ceremony but did not supply a detailed construction schedule, contractor information or project budget.
