Mayor Alex Funaghi said he witnessed a large, peaceful protest in Laguna Beach and estimated the crowd at about 2,500 people. "I think it was around 2,500 people," Funaghi said during an interview on StuNews Fair Game, adding that the demonstration included American flags and was not disruptive.
Funaghi said the city had not been notified of any Immigration and Customs Enforcement presence in Laguna Beach and that he had no indication ICE had conducted operations there. "At this point, we are not advised that that that will happen," he said. He cautioned against rumors and urged discussion based on facts, noting reports that restaurant workers were said to have been detained were unconfirmed.
The mayor said Laguna Beach aims to remain a model for civil discourse and highlighted public safety preparations by the Laguna Beach Police Department. He said the city is focused on local priorities such as wildfire prevention, law enforcement funding and infrastructure maintenance rather than national debates. Funaghi called for immigration policy that is "smart and...compassionate" while enforcing laws and securing borders.
