The council authorized a contract for an executive search firm to support the recruitment of a new city manager, approving a not-to-exceed amount of $50,000 for the search. A subcommittee (Mayor and Council Member Molina) interviewed four firms and recommended Ralph Andersen & Associates for their specialized experience recruiting California city managers and for flexibility in interview/visit scheduling.
Council members said the firm’s references and experience with municipal executive searches and its one-year placement guarantee were deciding factors. The firm will gather council and stakeholder input, advertise the position, screen candidates, and conduct background checks; staff said a community survey component would be included at roughly $3,800 and that the committee will work with the firm to refine the brochure and process. The council asked that the recruitment focus remain on filling the city manager position first before using the contract for additional recruitment needs.
The motion to proceed with the firm and limit the initial work to the city manager recruitment (not to exceed $50,000) passed by voice vote.
