City zoo reports secretary bird chick, bison calf and World Giraffe Day events

The zoo recently hatched and fledged another secretary bird chick; staff said the zoo is the only Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) institution actively breeding the species. Padabam said another egg was laid the day before the meeting and staff expect a fertile egg to hatch in the coming weeks.
The zoo also reported a newborn bison calf (a female named Blue Bonnet) and said guests can visit the new exhibit animal. The zoo plans member programming including a Peppa Pig character appearance on June 28 (free for members) and World Giraffe Day programming—giraffe barn tours, yoga on the terrace and other activities—with proceeds from upcharges directed to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. The zoo noted June 21 is World Giraffe Day and that the zoo’s bull giraffe, Congo, has a birthday coinciding with the celebration.
Padabam emphasized the conservation importance of secretary birds and the zoo’s role in AZA breeding efforts. No board action was taken; the update was informational.
