Multiple members of the public urged the Parks, Recreation and Arts Commission to support court upgrades and community partnerships at Roeding Park and to address storage and shade needs.
Director Aaron Aguirre told the commission that the Roeding Park project is on the books: dedicated pickleball courts will be installed on the northern part of the tennis complex, along with multiuse courts for futsal and basketball. Aguirre said funding has been appropriated, a contract awarded, and work is expected to begin this fall; he offered to provide start dates and follow up directly with residents.
Camilla Sutherland and Adam Balakian (Balakian identifies himself as a community tennis facilitator) thanked staff for last year’s Measure P resurfacing of 11 courts and urged continued collaboration with the U.S. Tennis Association and local community tennis groups. Balakian reported a storage shed at Roeding Park burned several months ago; community volunteers and donors have offered funds to replace a small storage unit (a 10-by-10 unit that does not require a permit), and Balakian asked the parks department to approve and facilitate placement of a replacement shed so equipment can be kept on-site.
Lisa Flores, representing a Roeding Park small-dog group, urged the commission to add shade on the small-dog side of the dog park; Flores said the request has been pending for more than two years and that summer sun makes the area unusable after late morning.
Commissioners and staff said they would follow up: Aguirre offered his card to provide a project start date for the pickleball courts and to coordinate on the storage-shed request; staff said they had set a meeting with USTA representatives to explore grants and program partnerships. No formal approvals or fund transfers were made at the meeting.
