Students, chaperones describe Costa Rica trip that included service, outdoor education and cultural experiences

Students and chaperones told the board June 24 about a weeklong school trip to Costa Rica that included outdoor education, cultural activities and community visits.
Chaperone Sunira Sauser led a photo presentation and described activities that included zip‑lining, visiting thermal springs and mud pools, learning to make tostones at a local home, snorkeling, hiking to La Fortuna waterfall, a coffee‑farm tour, white‑water rafting and visiting local conservation and sustainability projects. Students also described interactions with their tour guide, Victor, and bus driver, Leo, and said those relationships helped the group experience local customs and practices.
Student speakers Asher and McKenna Holben read brief reflective pieces about the trip. Asher highlighted the tour guide’s “dedication, kindness, and affable” manner and said his daily quotes inspired the group; McKenna said traveling alone abroad helped her grow and build bonds with peers, chaperones and local hosts. Another student speaker called the trip “an adventure of a lifetime” and urged future travel opportunities for SV students.
Chaperones and students thanked the board and staff for supporting the trip; staff said photographs and a flash drive were distributed to participants and parents and that a formal presentation of locations and learning goals will be provided to the board at a future meeting.
