Athletics and community education leaders reported a strong spring season and outlined summertime enrichment programs, facility upgrades and plans for an athletic advisory group at the board meeting.
Director Paige Paulson reported participation numbers and season highlights: girls soccer (42 participants; varsity district champions; lost in regional final), girls tennis (39 participants), boys golf (15 participants, one individual medalist), boys and girls track and field (60 and 28 participants respectively, multiple state qualifiers and all-state recognitions), baseball (40 participants; fourth consecutive district championship; lost in regional final) and softball (27 participants, district champions; lost in regional final). The district fields an esports program (13 participants) and co-ops with neighboring schools for lacrosse. Paulson said many spring teams performed well and that returning players and underclassmen will form a strong base for next year.
Paulson described enrichment and community programs: Pickleball-for-All classes with Lansing Community College partnership, a summer art camp with five sessions and roughly 50 sign-ups so far, remodeled weight-room equipment supported by recreation millage funds, and ongoing efforts to streamline administrative duties for coaches. He said the district has received about four applicants so far for a proposed athletic advisory group and hopes the group can provide community input and improve communication consistency across teams and boosters.
Board members asked how teams communicate schedules and results; Paulson said communication currently varies by sport and booster groups, and the advisory group will be one forum to identify more consistent districtwide channels while maintaining booster autonomy. The district calendar remains the primary centralized source of event times and locations.
Facilities and summer projects mentioned by athletics staff included tennis court work, site preparation for the softball complex and weight-room upgrades funded by the recreation millage.
